Awkwafina began as a American performer and rapper, performing sly tunes that dealt with questions of race and sexual identity with a comedic twist. Before expanding to Hollywood the singer was able to make a few songs. The actress was born Nora Lum to Chinese and Korean immigrant parents within Forest Hills Queens her first experience with music came through the trumpet. Her classical, jazz and hip-hop training began as she was in her teens. When she was in the college years, she remained focused on her studies. She majored both in women's study as well as journalism. While she was for a brief amount of time in Beijing, Mandarin language classes were offered as well. It wasn't until after graduating that she shifted her focus on music. Her 2012 track My Vag a response to Mickey Avalon's My Dick found viral success across the Internet and was later released on her debut album Yellow Ranger in 2014.
